Every summer, Rose goes with her mum and dad to a lake house in Awago Beach. It’s their getaway, their refuge. Rosie’s friend Windy is always there, too, like the little sister she never had. But this summer is different. Rose’s mum and dad won’t stop fighting, and when Rose and Windy seek a distraction from the drama, they find themselves with a whole new set of problems. Jillian Tamaki et Mariko Tamaki sont canadiennes, cousines et probablement "thirty-somethings". La première dessine des illustrations, des webcomics et des romans graphiques, tandis que la seconde fait du théâtre et écrit des romans graphiques.
‘This One Summer’ est leur 2è oeuvre entreprise en commun, après ‘Skim’ (VO et VF).
Ce récit d’apprentissage suit les quelques jours de vacances de juillet de Rose et Windy, deux gamines canadiennes, à Awago Beach, près d’un lac où leurs familles respectives ont leurs habitudes. Rose est la plus âgée mais elle a probablement tout juste 11-12 ans. Windy a un an et demi de moins, mais la différence d’âge n’a pas empêché l’amitié déjà longue de ces deux filles uniques qui se retrouvent ainsi chaque été. Les auteurs présentent l’histoire à la hauteur de ces early teenagers, et principalement de Rose, dont les parents se disputent.
Deux drames délimitent cette "tranche de vie" qui marquera les deux amies, dans leur parcours vers la vie adulte et amoureuse.
Clair et bien construit, remarquablement dessiné dans les couleurs que l’on voit en couverture, ce récit – qui n’est pas un livre pour les enfants des âges des héroïnes – est une preuve solide que le "roman graphique", concept né il y a tout-de-même environ 30 ans maintenant, donne lieu à des œuvres véritablement littéraires… avec en plus de magnifiques illustrations.
